Wonder Woman: Bloodlines (2019) Review

Summary

A fairly exciting action adventure animated film from the DC Universe line, Wonder Woman: Bloodlines skews slightly adult, with some brief nudity, harsh language, and strong violence, but it elevates the DC Universe Animated Movie series quite a bit with good animation, and a storyline that really feels compelling with high stakes for the characters.

Plot: Wonder Woman tries to help a troubled young girl, Vanessa, who has fallen in with a deadly organization known as Villainy Inc. headed by Dr. Cyber.

Review: Five years after pilot Steve Trevor (voiced by Jeffrey Donovan) crashes into the secret Amazonian island Themyscira, Princess Diana (voiced by Rosario Dawson) – who accompanied Steve back to “man’s world” and became Wonder Woman – Diana faces a threat in a friend she once had: a rebellious young woman named Vanessa, who becomes a member of a terrible organization called Villainy, Inc. Vanessa, thinking that Diana was the cause of her mother’s death, turns her back on her friend and allows herself to become a human experiment, a cyborg with wings and a banshee howl that can knock down a giant. Vanessa’s superior is a mysterious figure named Dr. Cyber, who has figured out how to resurrect the deadly Gorgon from myth and legend, the almighty Medusa, and she plans on using Diana to unwittingly lead her to the secret island Themyscira so that she can have Medusa wipe out all the Amazons and lead some kind of revolt against mankind. Wonder Woman must take up her sword and lead a small attack mission to her former home and stop Vanessa and Medusa from annihilating her entire race.

Wonder Woman gets her ass kicked, but she does eventually prevail, but the movie had be wondering if she was going to survive her ordeal against Medusa or not. It got that serious. Frederik Wiedman’s score is great, while the direction by Sam Liu and Justin Copeland is some of their best work, thus far. Here’s hoping we get some more of these Wonder Woman animated adventures. This one is solid all the way through.
