‘Speed Racer’ Actor Christian Oliver’s Final Film, CRUEL LOVE, Is Now Available to Rent or Buy

Cruel Love, the final film completed by German-American actor and producer Christian Oliver, is now available in most territories on Apple TV and Amazon, with additional viewing options at CruelLoveMovie.com.

Cruel Love reunited Oliver with director Nick Lyon for their fifth film together — and their first as producing partners.

Oliver finished his work on December 20, 2023. He died on January 4, 2024, in a plane crash off Bequia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, with his daughters Madita and Annik. He was 51. The film is dedicated to his memory.

He and Lyon first worked together on Hercules Reborn in 2014. Cruel Love was their fifth collaboration — after Hercules Reborn, Christmas in Vienna, D-Day: Battle of Omaha Beach, and English Estate — and the first they produced together, after years of talking about a bigger partnership.

Born in Germany, Oliver built a career on both sides of the Atlantic. German audiences knew him as Detective Jan Richter on Alarm für Cobra 11. His international credits included Steven Soderbergh’s The Good German, Bryan Singer’s Valkyrie, and the Wachowskis’ Speed Racer, where he played Snake Oiler. He later appeared in Sense8 and Hunters, and lent his voice to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

In Cruel Love he plays Ivan, a charismatic man whose romance with Julia Thomas (Elisabeth Harnois) turns darker as questions about his identity surface. Bai Ling, Ricco Ross, and Ken Davitian co-star.

“Christian and I made five films together, and Cruel Love was the beginning of a producing partnership we’d talked about for years. We met on Hercules Reborn in Morocco, and when I got back to Los Angeles I answered a Craigslist ad for a leather sofa. Christian opened the door. From then on, we kept finding our way back to each other. On Christmas in Vienna, I watched him learn ballroom dancing with Elisabeth in a week and then dance until five in the morning with 200 people in a palace. That was Christian — all in, always. His last day on Cruel Love ended at sunset on a rooftop in downtown LA. We took a team photo, and I had no idea it would be our last. I miss him every day, and I know I’m not alone in that. But an actor never really leaves — Christian is in every frame of this film, and he always will be. His talent, his warmth, his spirit are what live on, and I hope that’s what the world feels watching him here.”

I also loved working with our director. Nick knows exactly what he wants within his vision. At the same time, he gives me complete freedom while keeping everything so precisely under his control. That dynamic challenges actors to be completely present and precise in every moment, while also allowing us the freedom to be romantically and creatively spontaneous. Working with Christian was a joy. He was so gentle and subtle, completely dedicated to this film and to his character. His skill is so refined that you almost don’t notice what he is doing — and yet everything feels incredibly real, sensitive, subtle, and natural.
