Catwoman: Hunted (2022) Blu-ray Review

Verdict
3

Summary

A fast and loose caper with lots of supernatural action done in a straightforward anime-style, Catwoman: Hunted leans very heavily into anime territory far more than previous DC Animated Movies have before it, and with some rather indistinct character designs (especially in the facial areas), the movie is one of the lesser recent films from the DC Universe line.

Plot:

Catwoman incurs the wrath of a crime syndicate when she steals a priceless emerald.

Review:

Selina Kyle – part time thief and full time mischief-maker – goes to a costume party hosted by Leviathan, a crime lord, where Black Mask and his goons are having an important meeting to decide on future deals regarding security measures for future big-time scores. Kyle, dressed as herself – Catwoman – steals a priceless emerald held under the tightest security in the building, and instigates a chase that has her racing down a mountain with goons after her like James Bond at the beginning of Quantum of Solace. Batwoman gets in the chase, and foils Kyle’s escape plan, and has her whisked off to a secure location where she forces her to work with Interpol to put an end to Leviathan’s crime reign once and for all, but it involves risking all nine of her slinky lives in order to accomplish it. Thrown into the mix are Solomon Grundy, Nosferata, and an assortment of others, including demons conjured from hell.

The voiceover work is adequate, but not especially astounding, and the score by Yutaka Yamada covers everything from jazz to synthwave. Anime filmmaker Shinsuke Terasawa makes his DC Animated Movie debut.

Catwoman: Hunted has just been released on a 4K / Blu-ray / Digital Code combo, as well as a Blu-ray / Digital Code combo pack. Special features include “When the Hunter Becomes the Hunted,” and “Catwoman: The Feline Femme Fatale.”
