Summary
It’s not a “fun” movie in any way, no, it’s a pretty grueling little exercise of filmmaking, and there were times when I had to look away because of the way people were treating each other.
Plot:
A winning lottery ticket turns into a curse for a group of random people in a liquor store.
Review:
Drug dealer Sterling (Angus Cloud who died before this was released) walks into a Los Angeles liquor store one December night and a commotion at the counter gets his attention: another guy has just won 156 million bucks after scanning his lottery ticket. Sterling puts a bag on his head, pulls out his gun, and robs the winner of his ticket. From the bathroom in the back of the store, an off-duty cop comes out, starts shooting – kills the guy who was just robbed – and Sterling shoots the cop. The other people in the store – including a young couple (the woman is very pregnant) and the owner of the shop – are now at the mercy of Sterling, who hasn’t thought any of this through. When the shooting stops, Sterling offers the three bystanders a cut of the lottery winnings if they help him dispose of the bodies. They agree. But what they don’t count on is that the cop isn’t dead yet; he’s already called his SWAT team friends and informed them what’s happening, and they’re on their way to clean up … and steal the winning ticket. What follows is a free-for-all night of survival for those whose lives have been completely upended by fate.
A situational thriller mostly set in and around the little Sip and Go shop where a winning lottery ticket provides the catalyst for human horrors and desperation for a handful of characters who must endure a night of unexpected tribulations before they can begin to see any sort of light at the end of the tunnel. It’s not a “fun” movie in any way, no, it’s a pretty grueling little exercise of filmmaking, and there were times when I had to look away because of the way people were treating each other. Filmmaker Dan Brown doesn’t shy away from sparing any of the characters a grim fate, and while there is a bit of a “happy” ending, I still found it a difficult movie to sit through. In one of his final roles, Cloud does a pretty good job as a lowlife, and fans of his might appreciate this movie than others.
Well Go USA’s new Blu-ray release of Your Lucky Day comes with some trailers, but no bonus features. It’s out now.
