The Inspector Wears Skirts (1988) 88 Films Blu-ray Review

Verdict
3.5

Summary

Not as compelling as most of the other pictures Rothrock co-starred in during her years in Hong Kong, The Inspector Wears Skirts is a footnote in her career, and if not for her involvement, the film would be lost in obscurity.

The new Blu-ray release of The Inspector Wears Skirts from 88 Films gives the film the ultimate royal treatment, with a high definition transfer that offers the film in its best presentation yet. Bonus features are aplenty, and I’m looking forward to their upcoming release of The Inspector Wears Skirts 2. 88 Films continues to prove that they’re one of the best boutique labels in the hard copy media world, and this is a very solid all-around release.

Plot:

A top squad of female cops is vigorously trained and put to the test.

Review:

A top female cop named Hu (Sibelle Hu) is asked to form an elite squad of female cops, and she is given a short amount of time to do it. The squad is put together and they train unbelievably hard for that duration. Their final test is when they are visited by a guest teacher, Madam Lo (Cynthia Rothrock), who takes them outside of the training compound and puts their abilities to the test on a ship. They fail miserably, but they are given another chance to prove their worth. They are asked to supervise and guard an auction house where precious jewels are being auctioned. A group of thieves have a plan to rob the jewels, but what they didn’t count on was coming face to face with the female squad, who are formidable enough (with the help of Madams Hu and Lo) to stop them. The final fight involving Hu, Rothrock, and the other girls is the highlight of the film.

Not as compelling as most of the other pictures Rothrock co-starred in during her years in Hong Kong, The Inspector Wears Skirts is a footnote in her career, and if not for her involvement, the film would be lost in obscurity. It spends an inordinate amount of time on sorority-style hijinks, pratfalls, and jokes, but none of it means anything without the action. Jackie Chan produced it. Wellson Chin, who also made Prince of the Sun with Rothrock, directed it.
