In In the early 1970s, Sylvester Stallone was a struggling actor, living paycheck to paycheck and trying to make it big in New York City. While he had a small role in the movie The Lords of Flatbush, it didn’t offer him the breakthrough he sought.
One fateful night, Stallone attended a boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner. There, he saw Wepner, also known as “The Bayonne Bleeder,” go toe-to-toe with the greatest fighter who ever lived. Later, he was on a casting call for an acting role and quickly realized he wasn’t right. On the way out, he told the producers about the story he was writing. They told him to bring it by later. They read the script and loved it, except for one thing: they didn’t want Sylvester Stallone to play the main character, Rocky. Other Hollywood actors like Ryan O’Neil and Burt Reynolds were safer bets at the box office.
They offered Stallone $360,000 for the script, with the condition that he wouldn’t play Rocky. Stallone was broke then, with no car and only $106 in the bank. However, he knew that if the movie did well, he would be devastated if he wasn’t the one playing Rocky. So he turned down the offer and rolled the dice, believing in himself and his creation.
Stallone convinced the producers to let him star in the movie, and they gave him the green light to make it with a small budget. Stallone used his friends and family in the cast to make the most of the limited resources, employed handheld cameras, and filmed most of the footage in one take. Despite the low budget and lack of experience, Stallone and his team created a timeless classic that went on to win three Oscars and earn over $200 million at the box office.
