Review:

After a number of “accidents” occur at an old mine near Denver, the mine is closed for more than 70 years, but several miners decide to open it back up and see what’s what. One of the guys goes missing in the mineshaft, and his close buddies and their girlfriends pay the consequences when something in the mine is reawakened and comes out to kill and feed. An old timer warns everyone about “the boogens,” an ancient monster lurking in the waters deep in the mineshaft but, of course, no one listens, and the deeper the youngsters go, the more vulnerable they become as the boogens takes its revenge by unleashing its wrath topside as it goes out to explore and feed. No one in town is safe – not even the animals – as the deadly leviathan creature goes about on its killing streak!

Filmmaker James L. Conway has enough fun with this material to make it a memorable flick, and if you like horror films with the mineshaft type setting (see also My Bloody Valentine), then this one will certainly fit the bill.

Kino Lorber reissues The Boogens on Blu-ray in a nice new HD master, improving on the previous Blu-ray edition from Olive Films. Kino’s edition comes with two new audio commentaries – one with the director, writer, and one of the acresses, and then another one with an actor and a film historian. There’s also a featurette on the director, and a reversible sleeve with two versions of the artwork, and a slipcover.
