Supervixens (1975) Severin Blu-ray Review

Summary

From sexploitation guru Russ Meyer, Supervixens actually follows a thread of a plot, with plenty of mostly pointless and superfluous sex interludes that only serve as an excuse to showcase more sex and nudity that the movie could easily have done without. But … who’s complaining?

Plot:

A man goes on the run when his wife is murdered, and he finds love again … but he also runs into his wife’s murderer, making things tricky.

Review:

A gas station attendant named Chet (Charles Pitt) is married to one hot number named SuperAngel (Shari Eubank) who nags at him 24/7 to come home during his breaks to give her a good lay, and she keeps a keen, watchful eye on him to make sure he never cheats on her. When they have an argument after making love, she goes ballistic and takes an axe to his truck, causing a neighbor to call the cops on him because it looks like Chet is abusing his woman. Warned by the sheriff Harry (Charles Napier) to better get ready for prison if he’s not careful, Chet goes to work the next day with his head hanging low. Meanwhile, Harry pays a visit to SuperAngel, who is ready to make a cuckold out of her husband, but when Harry can’t “get it up,” she insults his manhood and masculinity and he turns on her and brutally murders her (the scene is actually pretty graphic and shocking, especially for a lighthearted film such as this), planning to put the blame on Chet. Chet is then (of course) blamed for his wife’s murder, but instead of facing the authorities to have a go at the justice system, he goes on the run and ends up in a Podunk town in the desert somewhere where he meets a smoking hot gas station attendant named SuperVixen (also played by Eubank). They fall for each other and get it on in no time, but lo and behold Sheriff Harry shows up and sees this opportunity to play with Chet and SuperVixen for a bit before he ultimately ends them in an explosive plan that completely and totally backfires on him.

From sexploitation guru Russ Meyer, Supervixens actually follows a thread of a plot, with plenty of mostly pointless and superfluous sex interludes that only serve as an excuse to showcase more sex and nudity that the movie could easily have done without. But … who’s complaining? The film is shockingly violent (like, seriously graphic and belongs in a horror movie), but it’s also consistently playfully sexy and goofy with wacky set-ups and sometimes feels like a Roadrunner cartoon. What can I say? If you like Russ Meyer movies and big (very big) boobs, there’s plenty to enjoy here.

Severin has just released a handful of Russ Meyer movies on Blu-ray, and Supervixen has likely never looked or sounded better than it does here in a new scan. It has archival features, including a commentary by Meyer, an interview with Meyer, an interview with Napier, a trailer, a TV spot, and more. Considering that both Napier and Meyer are long gone, this feels poignant and important that the film has been reissued and makes them feel alive again.
