Sting (2023) Well Go USA Blu-ray Review

Summary

Quite simply the best killer spider movie since Arachnophobia, Sting is a gnarly creature feature that was surprisingly shot in Australia with astonishing special effects. It kept me on the edge of my seat and has a harder-than-usual edge, so if scary spider movies are gonna make you uneasy, be warned!

Plot:

An apartment complex has a spider infestation … but it’s not just a regular spider, but a creature from out space!

Review:

A tiny particle from space rains down and delivers a wee little spider to an apartment complex in NY during the winter. A 12 year-old girl named Charlotte (Alya Browne) finds the creature and keeps it in a bottle as a pet, surprised that the thing can emulate the sounds she makes. She feeds it: Big mistake! The creature grows bigger at exponential rates, and within a few days has grown so big that it can no longer be contained in the jar. Unbeknownst to her parents (her dad is some kind of struggling comic book artist) and the other tenants in the building, the creature Charlotte is harboring is not just dangerous, but deadly to humanity at large. She entrusts the spider to a curious neighbor, who happens to know a thing or two about spiders, and he quickly concludes that the arachnid is not of earth because its chemical composition is not on record, which alarms him, but not enough to destroy it immediately. The spider escapes (killing pets and humans along the way), nesting somewhere in the walls of the building, prompting a visit from an agitated exterminator who has no idea what he’s in for!

This was a down and dirty little horror film, with some really nasty and scary kills, and at only 91 minutes it has a fleet pace. From director Kiah Roache-Turner, who made the cool Wyrmwood movies. Recommended.

Sting is out on DVD and Blu-ray this July 30th, and it comes with three behind-the-scenes making-of features. Horror fans and creature feature movie aficionados need to add this one to the collection ASAP.
