Summary

Lilo & Stitch is a rare remake that hits home emotionally – adding a fresh layer to a beloved story for old and new audiences.

Plot: A lonely Hawaiian girl befriends a fugitive alien who helps to mend her broken family.

Review: In yet another Disney live-action remake, Lilo & Stitch surprisingly stands out as a heartfelt and hilarious recreation of the original 2002 animated film. We start the movie off in a very Marvel-esque intergalactic setting, which, even for those who are not aware of the animated film, will feel a sense of familiarity.

The story stays true to its original, navigating what it means to be part of and have a family throughout the duration of the film. Six-year-old Lilo (Maia Kealoha) is incredibly lonely – on top of losing both her parents, she has no friends and a big sister too busy trying to keep them afloat. Kealoha is a young star as our Lilo, playing a perfect balance of chaotic sweetness to match our wild fugitive, Stitch. Together, they are a comedic duo that is sure to ensue laughs with audiences.

Lilo’s relationship with her older sister, Nani (Sydney Elizabeth Agudong) is the glue that ties this whole film together. Their sisterly bond emotionally grounds the story – arguably even deeper than the animated movie. Agudong is phenomenal as the older sister: her resilience and struggle as a sister-turned-unexpected-mother shines on screen. Their relationship is complicated, but her unquestionable love for Lilo is clear.

The CGI mirrors the wild, energetic, chaos that is Stitch and his alien species from the original. Unlike other remakes, we don’t lose the cartoon-like, emotional, facial features you get from adapting non-humans on screen. This added another layer of familiarity for viewers, creating a sense of sympathy for the aliens (all of them).

Overall, Lilo & Stitch adds a fresh spark to the animated film. It not only complements the original but also adds a deeper emotional arc to the story that really hits home.

Lilo & Stitch opens exclusively in theatres May 23.
