Horror noir thriller CURSED IN BAJA from filmmaker and performer Jeff Daniel Phillips (THE MUNSTERS, LORDS OF SALEM) will be available in select theaters and on VOD on October 29th from Anchor Bay.
Synopsis:
Pirelli, an ex-lawman and recently released con, is enlisted to find the heir to a Los Angeles fortune. Pirelli’s history with the wealthy family on a past case has given them great hope in finding their lost grandson, the sole
benefactor of the fortune. The investigation leads Pirelli to return south of the border where he faces off with a drug cartel, a beast-worshiping cult and his own complicated past. The journey challenges him to the core.
“A handmade fever dream that smashes together scuzzy crime noir with surreal creature horror. Fans of neo-noir, practical fx and psychotronic cinema will have much to enjoy here. Possibly the world’s only chupacabra crime thriller! Wild woozy and weird. WTF!” – Phil Nobile Jr. FANGORIA
Director’s Statement:
“For the past two decades working within horror cinema, my time acting in movies and attending horror conventions have led me to understand this genre in a unique way. As an independent filmmaker, I know what the horror community wants, they embrace individual vision, and cult media. Within the making of CURSED IN BAJA, I set out to marry the character-driven noir with my beloved monster films of my youth. Some of my earliest memories of cinema were 70’s character-driven genre films at drive ins with my parents and creature features on television at home. The main character in my film, an antihero called Pirelli, hearkens upon these genres, mixing the angst and redemption of noir flicks, and battling against the mythologies of creature movies. We were challenged with making an unpredictable, captivating story with our modest budget and tight shooting schedule and I believe we did. Enlisting my friends is the key to our film’s success. What I’ve learned working on Rob Zombie films was to come prepared, surround oneself with trusted crew and cast and be ready to pivot if a scene or situation organically evolves for the sake of the performance or an effect becoming even better or more intense like in our film.I’m fortunate to have so many talented friends in the industry I’ve acquired over the last couple of decades who share the same work ethic and artistic integrity. These friends and I are extremely proud in what we all created on this film.”
Anchor Bay Entertainment was relaunched by Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz, who also serve as chiefs of Umbrelic Entertainment. The pair bought the company’s trademark to reboot it and release genre films and cult favorites, after Anchor Bay was included in Starz’s 2016 sale to Lionsgate.
“We’re thrilled to bring Jeff and his vision into the Anchor Bay family,” Zambeck says. “’Cursed in Baja’ is an intense journey into madness, destined to take its place among the genre-bending classics that have come to define indie film.”
