Four Bullets for Joe (1964) MVD Classics Blu-ray Review

2.5

Summary

An early, and very slow moving spaghetti western without an ounce of style or pizazz, Four Bullets for Joe is closer in theme to a murder mystery than a shoot ’em up. For only the most devoted fans of the genre, this one is of very mild interest and nothing more.

Plot:

The brother of a dead woman who was accused of murder seeks revenge.

Review:

A young woman stands accused of murder in front of a court: She’s found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Panicked, she flees the courthouse in a frenzy and is promptly run over and killed by a stagecoach. Her last words were that she was innocent. A few days later her brother – a notorious gunslinger named Dalton (Paul Piaget) – rides into town and demands justice for his sister. The sheriff (Fernando Casanova) knows that trouble is going to befall his town because Dalton isn’t messing around. Those in the jury who found Dalton’s sister guilty are found dead one by one in vicious ways, and the sheriff comes to realize that perhaps the girl was innocent after all, but who had the motive to frame her? By the time the sheriff pieces it together who is responsible for the original crime, Dalton is ready to get his final revenge.

An early, and very slow moving spaghetti western without an ounce of style or pizazz, Four Bullets for Joe is closer in theme to a murder mystery than a shoot ’em up. The film is only 75 minutes long, which is appreciative, and the scenery is nice, but there’s very little in the way of thrills, originality, or even creativity with director Agustin Navarro’s method of placing the camera in static shots becomes tiresome pretty quick. For only the most devoted fans of the genre, this one is of very mild interest and nothing more.

MVD Classics has just released a Blu-ray of Four Bullets for Joe, and it comes in a nice, crisp high definition transfer without any bonus features.
