HIM (2025) 4K Blu-ray Review

Darkly Entertaining
3.5

Summary

HIM may find an audience in the coming years and become a cult favourite and it deserves it as it’s a darkly entertaining look into sacrificing everything for your dreams. The 4K looks and sounds great with plenty of special features making this worth picking up.

Plot: Jordan Peele and Monkeypaw Productions present a chilling journey into the dark side of the pursuit of excellence at any cost. Attacked by an unhinged fan, quarterback Cameron Cade receives a lifeline when his football idol Isaiah White offers to train him. But as Isaiah’s charisma curdles into something sinister, Cam descends a disorienting spiral that may cost him more than he bargained for.

Review: I wasn’t sure what to expect from HIM as the trailers made it look very weird so I wasn’t surprised when it wasn’t a huge hit at the box office.

I just got the 4K of the film and I had to say that although it definitely won’t appeal to everyone due to its surreal imagery, I really enjoyed it. I think many people have said they couldn’t take Marlon Wayans in a serious role but this is one of the best pictures he’s done. His washed up football player Isaiah White takes under his wing Cameron Cade (Tyriq Withers) who gets a head injury and nearly loses his shot at the big time, so it’s up to Isaiah to try and bring out the best in Cam.

Isaiah may not be everything he seems at first and Cam begins to wonder if he has made a deal with the Devil. The film explores the dark side of sports as well as “toxic masculinity” (I hate that term) and parental pressure and expectations.

I didn’t know what to expect from this movie but I thought it was refreshingly different; at least it wasn’t another reboot, sequel or superhero movie, so for that reason alone it deserves to be seen. At around 90 minutes it doesn’t wear out its welcome and is well paced.

The set design and surreal visuals are what really make this memorable and I also had no clue which direction the story was going in so it kept me on my toes as a viewer.

It looks and sounds perfect on 4K with the inky blacks looking great on my TV; the special features are also impressive with an alternate ending which is entertaining however, I prefer the bloodbath we get instead. Wayans and Withers seem to get on well and there is some fun banter between them in one of the featurettes where they talk about getting into shape for the role. The deleted mid credit scene doesn’t add much so it’s understandable why it was removed.

Overall, HIM was far more entertaining than I expected and I think it may find a cult following in the coming years; this 4K has some great special features making this worth checking out if you’re curious for something a little different.
