Summary

Caught Stealing is an engaging thriller with an entertaining story, a charismatic lead role and is well paced making this worth checking out.

Plot: Burned-out ex-baseball player Hank Thompson unexpectedly finds himself embroiled in a dangerous struggle for survival amidst the criminal underbelly of 1990s New York City, forced to navigate a treacherous underworld he never imagined.

Review: There are certain directors that you’re not a fan of but you always try to give them a chance. Darren Aronofsky is one of those filmmakers for me. So, when the trailer for this came out, I was shocked to see a completely different type of film than what he usually makes and I was certainly intrigued.

Well, Caught Stealing certainly delivers what you see in the trailer with not only boasting a stellar cast who are mostly utilized well. Austin Butler showcases here that he has certain charisma, which helps make you feel what this character goes through throughout the film.

The rest of the supporting cast especially Regina King, Liev Schreiber, and Vincent D’Onofrio also excel in their roles with Schreiber and D’Onofrio providing some good comedy when they are on screen.

The story is fairly solid for the most part, providing enough twists to make it interesting.

It was clear that Aronofsky was inspired by Guy Ritchie’s films as this has the look and sometimes the feel of those, but he manages to put his own spin on it that it doesn’t feel like a complete copycat.

Overall, Caught Stealing is a solid thriller that features a stellar cast, is well-directed, has a good story that is engaging, and moves at a fairly decent pace. Definitely recommend!
