Indie Feature: Looking at The Ghost That Wouldn’t Die from Matthew Packman

Plot: Plagued rock star, Devin Crane, struggles to navigate her deadly affliction on tour.

Poor Devin Crane (Lanae Hyneman) has been having a rough time of it having survived the events of Real Cool Time and Morbid Colors. Now her hunger is destroying her life including her music tour in The Ghost That Wouldn’t Die (awesome name). Devin’s closest friends are trying to bring her to her senses but her hunger can’t be satiated and her life is spiraling out of control.

The visuals are eye popping going between black and white and colour which captures Devin’s fragmented mental state. Lanae Hyneman once again shines as Devin and you almost feel she isn’t acting but these are events caught on camera that actually happened.

I love how the story is told using visuals, music and voiceover with no dialogue spoken between the characters that we can hear. We don’t need to as it’s the perfect example of see don’t tell.

Overall, The Ghost That Wouldn’t Die is another winner from filmmaker Matthew Packman and watching the journey of Devin Crane is devastating and yet endlessly fascinating. It’s also only 20 minutes long so it’s a quick watch that sticks with you after it’s over.
