Invasion of the Bee Girls (1973) Kino Lorber Blu-ray Review

Verdict
3.5

Summary

A “B” (Bee?) movie if there ever was one, Invasion of the Bee Girls is a cornball sex thriller in the guise of a creature feature. It plays itself seriously without a wink or a nudge, which is the deciding, key factor that makes it a legit movie (and pretty entertaining to boot) that deserves to be seen. Yes, it’s full of kinky sex and a ton of nudity, earning a place in the nudie movie hall of fame, but it works on the whole thanks to committed performances and a solid turn by star William Smith. The girls are uniformly smoking hot (and if I’m not mistaken, all the girls in it are featured at least once in the nude), so what’s not to like?

Plot:

Mutant “bee girls” are seducing and killing men by the dozens, and a government agent is trying to figure it all out.

Review:

A male bacteriologist is found dead in a motel room, naked and alone, and a local sheriff (Cliff Osmond) shrugs it off as no big deal, at least not until a handful of other men in the area are found dead in the same manner. Coronaries? Maybe. Within a day, a government agent named Agar (William Smith looking snappy) shows up, asking questions as to why all these characters are dying. There’s a common denominator: They’re all in a similar field of science. He teams up with an attractive librarian and they begin to piece together a conspiracy that seems totally outlandish, but entirely within the realm of scientific possibility: Genetic mutations are occurring within a group of sexy women, and they’re exhibiting the characteristics of a bee hive that serves its queen. The queen, in question, is the slinky scientist (played by Anitra Ford) who lures other sexy women into her hive where they’re transformed into man-hunting vixens! The Invasion of the Bee Girls is upon us!

Long available in the public domain, Invasion of the Bee Girls arrives in a pretty sweet looking high definition Blu-ray edition from Kino Lorber as part of their “Kino Cult” line (this is #24 on the spine). It comes with an audio commentary by several film historians, some trailers, and TV spots, as well as a slipcover.
