Why You Need to See The Neon Demon

“But Eoin, you only gave it 3 stars in your review the other day!” This is true but it’s been a long time since I’ve watched a film that has stuck with me after watching it so I think that after I’ve seen it again it would probably go up to 4 stars.

The haunting score and the stunning visuals will draw you in but the weird narrative may certainly put some people off; it’s the kind of daring and challenging movie you should at least watch once.

I will likely end up watching it again on the big screen and then buying the Blu-ray as I think it requires multiple viewings. If a movie can challenge you and actually make you feel something (even if it’s just digust) then that is special; in this day and age of disposable blockbusters I admire a director like Nicholas Winding Refn who isn’t afraid to try something different and be a unique voice in the crowd.

He actually made Keanu Reeves scary and after having met Reeves in real life I can tell you he’s actually one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.

Jena Malone was a revelation and simply magnetic in this movie; her character Ruby is immediately creepy yet approachable and she completely steals the show from Elle Fanning.

So many scenes keep coming back to me and I keep hearing Cliff Martinez’ score all the time in my head and it makes me want to watch it again and visit this bizarre world.

I know there are a lot of big movies out over the next few weeks and it’s odd to release a smaller movie like this the same weekend as Independence Day: Resurgence but I hope The Neon Demon still finds an audience as it deserves debate, dissection and further discussion.  *scratches beard thoughtfully*

I started The Action Elite a few years ago; it's grown from strength to strength but now seems like the right time to expand. I've always loved different movie genres like horror, sci-fi and dramas so you'll see a wide range of different movies covered here.
