The Influence of Pay it Forward

It’s hard to believe it’s nearly 16 years since the movie Pay It Forward hit theatres and I don’t think anyone could have predicted the influence it would have on popular culture.

Based on the novel of the same name from Catherine Ryan Hyde, the movie starred Kevin Spacey and Haley Joel Osment and it told the story of a social studies teacher who gives an assignment to his junior high school class to think of an idea to change the world for the better, then put it into action. When one young student creates a plan for “paying forward” favors, he not only affects the life of his struggling single mother, but he sets in motion an unprecedented wave of human kindness which, unbeknownst to him, has blossomed into a profound national phenomenon.

I’ve been the recipient of people paying it forward several times having my coffee, lunch or even a chocolate bar paid for for no other reason than to be nice.

The movie’s worldwide gross was only $55,707,411 on a budget of $40 million but it appears box office doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things as the term “Pay it Forward” is now part of everyday vocabulary. We all know that life for the most part is very hard and frankly sucks so it was refreshing to see a movie/book which inspired such positivity and kindness which is something we all need to see more of every day.

There is even a Pay it Forward Day with the next one taking place on Friday, April 28, 2017 but why wait until then? It makes someone’s day when you’re nice to them so go ahead and buy their coffee; it hardly costs a lot (unless you go to Starbucks) and will make the recipient feel good.
